Name: Dr. Alka Pandey, Aditi Garg / Date: 28-01-2025

Background: Adolescence marks a significant developmental phase, characterized by emotional growth and the emergence of romantic relationships. Prior studies suggest both positive and negative impacts of these relationships on academic achievement and student motivation, but the evidence remains inconclusive.

Aim: This study aims to examine the association between adolescent romantic relationships, motivation levels, and academic performance among school students aged 13 to 19 studying in classes 7th to 12th.

Method: A descriptive correlation design was adopted, using a structured questionnaire developed by Bernales and Colonia, Cebu College Students (2011-2012). A purposive snowball sample of 100 students in romantic relationships from Meerut Public School branches in India participated. Data was collected via Google Forms and interviews, with Pearson’s correlation coefficient used for analysis.

Result: The correlation coefficient (r) between motivation and academic performance was found to be 0.3092 at a 0.01 significance level, indicating a positive but modest relationship between the two variables.

Conclusion: Adolescents in romantic relationships showed increased motivation, which correlated positively with their academic performance. However, the strength of this relationship was relatively low, suggesting that while romantic relationships may boost motivation, they are not the sole determinants of academic success.
